Quantum Leap

Newbery have a reputation for style, and what better occasion to showcase that style than the T20 World Cup, where upcoming star Matt Machan will be putting the new Quantum through its paces. To get in the mood for some next-generation cricket, we travelled to Newbery’s stunning Sussex base and sat down with Matt to talk heroes, hopes and bats.

“I don’t tend to have many pre-match rituals, but I always put my right foot on the field first”

Do you have any pre-match or in-game rituals that you follow?

I don’t tend to have many pre-match rituals, but I always put my right foot on the field first. I don’t know why … I’ve done it since I was a young boy and I’ll continue to do so.

Who’s the best player you’ve played
with or against?

Best player I’ve played with would have to be Mahela Jayawardene, and the best I’ve played against either Muralitharan or Tendulkar.

And the toughest opponent?

Mitchell Starc at last year’s World Cup!

Who were your childhood
cricketing heroes?

Matthew Hayden and Kevin Pietersen. Growing up watching those guys bat really inspired me. I still enjoy watching the likes of McCullum and Warner and the way they play the game and go about it.

What are your hopes for the
T20 World Cup?

To be a consistent performer and win games for Scotland during the tournament. We still have to qualify for the main event so that’s the goal at the moment.

Having grown up with Twenty20 cricket, do you think the T20 style of play comes more naturally to you compared to some of the older county pros?

I guess so. You’re seeing more of a trend with young players playing more freely and more dynamically. If you look at the recent England side that played this winter, and especially the T20 side, it’s an incredibly young group of players and I think that proves the point.

What do you look for in a cricket bat?

I look for a bat that’s between 2.8 and 2.11 pounds. I like it to feel comfortable in my hand and have a nice pick up. I’m a big believer in the pick up of a bat – if the weight and the middle are right then it will feel like a very nice bat.
